Ski Resort Review | Grosser Arber (King of the Bavarian Forest)
This past weekend, I explored a new ski/snowboard resort on the German and Czech Republic border called Grosser Arber, which translates to "King of the Bavarian Forest." At 1456 meters, it's the highest peak in the Bavarian-Bohemian mountain range and the only one above the tree line.

Grosser Arber has 1 gondola, 2 chairlifts, and 2 drag lifts (T-bars) as well as 3 easy blue runs, 4 medium red runs, and 3 hard black runs. For a Saturday, I was definitely impressed with how short the lines were and how quickly you could get back on the lift. In fact, sometimes there wasn't even a line at all!

My husband and I originally went to practice in the terrain park, but their beginner level Family Cross Park was unfortunately closed that day. Instead we explored off piste in the trees, worked on our 180s, and practiced riding "goofy." For all you non-snowboarders, that means riding with your non-dominant foot in front. I also got the chance to practice using the T-bar, which is WAY harder than it looks.

We chose the 4-hour adult pass for a mere 24 Euro. Full day adult passes are also available for just 32 Euro. Several pricing options are offered on their website to suit your needs. Don't forget to turn your pass in at the ticket window before you leave if you'd like a 2 Euro refund. I always keep mine because it doubles as a souvenir!
No need to worry if your kids aren't quite ready for the mountain. The ArBär-Kinderland children's area includes a toboggan run and 4 conveyor belts, and was voted best children's area in 2012 by SkiResort.Info.

Overall, this is definitely a resort I would recommend for a day/weekend of riding. Pricing is reasonable, and the variety of runs and children's area offer something for everyone. After you finish for the day, you can warm up and refuel at one of five cafes/restaurants. Find out more information at http://www.arber.de. Happy shredding!
